About Patrick Cates
Patrick Cates was selected by the Board of County Commissioners to serve as the Douglas County Manager effective March 7, 2019.
Patrick has over 22 years of experience with the State of Nevada. Prior to coming to Douglas County, Patrick was appointed by Governor Brian Sandoval to serve as the Director of the Nevada Department of Administration (D of A) on September 14, 2015.
In Patrick’s capacity as D of A Director, he oversaw a variety of agencies including: Administrative Services; Enterprise IT Services; Fleet Services; Hearings and Appeals; Human Resource Management; Public Works; Purchasing; Risk Management; State Library, Archives and Public Records; the Office of Grant Procurement, Coordination and Management; the Deferred Compensation Program; and the Victims of Crime Program.
Prior positions include six years as Deputy Director of the Department of Wildlife where he managed administrative and support functions to include budgeting, contracting, grants management, facilities management, information technology, engineering, personnel, and operations.
Patrick also served the Nevada Departments of Cultural Affairs, Health and Human Services, and Motor Vehicles and Public Safety.
Mr. Cates holds a bachelor degree in economics from the University of Nevada, Reno.
Patrick grew up in Washoe County and graduated from Reed High School in Sparks. He met his wife, Bonnie, while attending college. Bonnie and Patrick have three daughters and are guardians of two nieces. They both enjoy history and the great outdoors.
