Conservation Bill

In 2009 Douglas County began a comprehensive process to develop a Federal Lands Bill with the goals of:

  • Transferring important federally owned cultural sites to the Washoe Tribe
  • Transferring federally owned flood control management areas and important water resource infrastructure parcels to Douglas County
  • Improving the management of certain federally owned public recreation parcels
  • Addressing the proposed Burbank Canyons Wilderness Area
  • Disposing of certain excess and difficult to manage federal lands, ensuring that the sales proceeds are used to acquire conservation easements from willing landowners in Douglas County.

More than 90 stakeholder groups were involved in the process and provided input. In December 2011 public open houses were held throughout the county to share information about the bill and gather input. In February 2012 the Board of Commissioners approved the concepts and framework that was forwarded to our Congressional representatives.  The Douglas County Economic Development and Conservation Act was introduced in both the Senate and the House of Representatives in early September, 2018.
