MINDEN, NV – In recognition of Nevada Flood Awareness Week, Douglas County, in partnership with the Nature Conservancy and the Army Corps of Engineers, is hosting an event designating the newly installed high water mark sign at the River Fork Ranch taking place Wednesday, November 15 at 11:00 a.m. at 399 Genoa Lane, Genoa, Nevada. The sign marks a recent flood event that occurred in 2023 and highlights the wide inundation area that the flood waters reach.
River Fork Ranch permanently protects more than 800 acres of floodplain at the confluence of the East and West Forks of the Carson River. Undeveloped floodplains reduce flood risk to communities downstream by giving rivers room to swell beyond their banks in times of high flow while also allowing groundwater aquifers to recharge and natural water purification processes to function. This floodplain protection works in concert with the community’s sustainable agriculture and ranching efforts.
Nevada Flood Awareness Week is November 12 – 18, 2023 and is designed for communities to help educate residents and businesses by providing information and resources to prepare and respond effectively during possible flooding situations.
