A Message form our Chairman on COVID-19

Dear Douglas County Citizens,

Our County, our region, and our nation are facing a challenge unlike any of us have experienced with the rising threat from the COVID‐19 virus. In Douglas County we are standing side by side with our leaders from Carson City Health and Human Services, and all of our regional partners to work together as a unified team to stop the spread of COVID-19 in northern Nevada. This is a time of great uncertainty and anxiety for all of us, but I want to assure you that although it might feel like life has been cancelled, this community and its leadership have not been cancelled.

Essential County staff are working hand‐in‐hand with our healthcare community, medical professionals and first responders. They have been working tirelessly to take care of us, our community, and for that, we offer our sincerest thanks.
In addition to our appreciation, I would begin by asking this of our community: please honor their sacrifice and long hours by doing your part and staying home, wash your hands, and find creative solutions to take care of yourselves and your family during this time of quarantine.

We are concerned about all our citizens. We urge you to continue to check on your loved ones, especially those who may be vulnerable.

Creative thinking, meeting challenges head‐on, and coming together as a community have been benchmarks for Douglas through history through floods and fire events. COVID‐19 is testing us, but I am confident we will continue to come together like we have in the past.

We have already seen an out-pour of community support with casinos embracing and displaying stay at home messaging and signs of encouragement in windows, homes, and local businesses through-out Douglas County. Many of our business are keeping people working from home where they can and we continue to push out messaging to get SBA monies to our businesses as soon as possible. Community is not cancelled here in Douglas County.

We are dedicated to continue to craft response strategies that will, hopefully, lessen the virus’ impact. Each of us are facing unique challenges and uncertainty about what the future holds. I urge you to take personal responsibility to take action today and every day to help our community stop the spread of COVID-19 by following guidelines from the CDC, our health providers and Carson City Health and Human Services, and our governors orders.

We understand you feel inconvenienced, but the threat is real. We are asking you all to be a part of the solution and please continue to stay home for Douglas, stay home for Nevada.
We are Americans and we can collectively beat this problem. My prayer is for all of us to survive and thrive. May God Bless Douglas County.

Barry Penzel
Douglas County Board of County Commissioners Chairman
