Are you Prepared for an Evacuation

Wildland fire season is upon us.  The Sheriff’s Office wants to help all Douglas County Residents, especially those living in the Tahoe Basin, Genoa, Holbrook and Pinenut Mountain areas prepare for an evacuation in the event of a fire.

Preparation is the key to being able to successfully evacuate your home in the event of an emergency.  Please prepare ahead of time by selecting those key items that you want to remove from your home if you have to leave quickly.  Have a personal and family evacuation plan.  Ensure that your vehicle has a full tank of gas and is in good operating condition.  Have, if possible several evacuation routes planned out ahead of time.  The direction you can and will have to evacuate may change due to fire conditions.

Do not wait to be ordered to evacuate.  Timing is everything, and we strongly encourage residents to not wait too long.  The Sheriff’s Office could quickly run out of resources and may not be able to physically contact each resident during certain evacuation situations.

You can register your cell phone to receive notifications through:

Reverse 911

Please follow the instructions delivered to your cell phone. We will also post emergency communications, evacuation instructions and shelter locations to our social media platforms and websites.

“We can’t stress enough that although we will use every possible resource available in the event of an evacuation, the safety of each individual and family is additionally their own responsibility,” said Sheriff Coverley.   “If asked to evacuate please do so.”

Lastly practice good situational awareness.  Be aware of your surroundings and be able to adapt and change if needed. Be flexible.   It is also important to remember that if technology should fail, residents are ultimately responsible for themselves and their family’s safety.  Have a plan and prepare.
