Volunteering with the Douglas County Sheriff's Department

Volunteer Program

 The Douglas County Sheriff's Department
is augmented by private citizens who volunteer
their time and efforts to help the sheriff's office
attain its goal in providing the very best in
public service for the residents and guests
 of Douglas County.

The volunteer program began in 1996 with a
handful of volunteers. Since that time, the
program has grown and volunteers now number
 in excess of 120.

Since the inception of our volunteer program,
our volunteers have donated more than
85,000 hours of volunteer service. Using the
 Independent Sector's estimation to calculate
the value of those donated hours, the savings
 to the community has been

                  $1,461,150.00

                       Assignments

 The Douglas County Sheriff's Department
 volunteer program offers several different
opportunities in which our citizens  may
 volunteer their time.

                        Sub Stations

The sheriff's office operates three sub-stations
within the county. Each substation is manned
by volunteers. Their duties include meeting
with and assisting citizens who come to the
station looking for assistance. They are
responsible for the issuance of dog licenses,
burn permits, tree cutting permits, bicycle
registration and other duties as directed.

                        Citizen Patrol

Uniformed volunteers work as a two person
team to enforce handicap parking violations,
 abandoned vehicles, radar trailer placement,
home vacation checks and other duties as
 directed.

                                Hours

 Volunteers, regardless of assignment, generally
will work one four-hour shift per week. All
efforts are made to keep the volunteer on a
 regular schedule.

                         Training

Volunteers need not have any previous training
or experience to apply. We provide to our
volunteers all the training necessary to succeed
 in their given assignment.

                          Supervision

All volunteers and volunteer programs are
supervised by the Administrative Sergeant of
 the Douglas County Sheriff's Department.

All programs are overseen and coordinated
by a volunteer coordinator who is responsible
to ensure that proper staffing levels, shift
assignments and conduct of volunteers meet
 department requirements.

                       Requirements

Volunteer applicants must be at least
eighteen years of age, a U.S. Citizen,
possess a valid driver's license and pass a
