Mission Statement
To continue to create and preserve quality parks and recreation opportunities, serving people of all ages and interests, that positively affect the community and enrich life.
Director’s Note
Douglas County Parks & Recreation maintains and manages over $100 million dollars in County public owned Park & Recreation facilities. It has been a priority of the County Board of Commissioners to do what it can in these tough economic times to keep these important facilities from deteriorating beyond a state of reasonable disrepair. With the massive cuts suffered by the Parks Division over the last 3 years, and with over $700,000 of a backlog in deferred maintenance, citizens have increased their responsibility and have lessened the impact.
For those that look closely, you will notice that the parks are no longer perfectly manicured or groomed. The tree pruning has been deferred and parking lot maintenance cut back. You will also see that equipment in the parks have been removed when broken rather than replaced. However we are still functioning at near 100% for our users.
We have our volunteers and non-profit organizations to thank for this soft landing. For example, our youth sports organizations over the years continue to take on more maintenance responsibilities for the fields that they impact. Our non-profit organizations that do events in the parks pay more and provide great services to the County.
Like everyone in the County we hope that this economy turns around and we’re able to restore our parks facilities to the previous level of maintenance. But until then we will continue to rely on the resources in our own community to handle the challenges that occur on a daily basis.
I wish to extend my sincere thanks and appreciation to all those who have contributed and helped over the years.
