Mission Statement
To continue to create and preserve quality parks and recreation opportunities, serving people of all ages and interests, that positively affect the community and enrich life.
Director’s Note
Green grass and improvements to parks is a sure sign that spring and summer are nearly here. However, as the national economy slows and County cutbacks put a squeeze on spending, parks and recreation will undoubtedly feel the impact. This is certainly true in the preparation of our 2008/2009 budget. The County Parks & Recreation budget has been cut over the last several years in an attempt to match growing expenditures with declining revenue sources. This year revenues are down in both Room Tax and Sales Tax generated, leaving a deficit within the department that is tough to overcome. The County Board of Commissioners and Parks & Recreation Department are committed to being fiscally responsible and has taken this decline in revenue seriously. Measures will be taken which will have a long-term affect on the department's operating budget. What this means is the Parks & Recreation Department, Library and Senior Services, will be reduced by the equivalent of 13 full-time staff at a minimum. Personnel costs are the only thing left after years of cutting services and supplies and attempts to raise additional revenues through fees and charges. As a result of these position eliminations, you will notice that this activity guide, as well as future activity guides, will be smaller and offering fewer programs. The Parks & Recreation Department appreciates our citizens' support over the years and asks their indulgence and patience while our County and country recover from a slowing economy. Your support for our programs by volunteering and participating is critical at this time. We would not exist to this extent without our volunteers and strong Parks & Recreation Department supporters. If you have an idea on how to help or would like to volunteer, pelase contact us at 775-782-9828.
