Senior Resistance Exercise
Join us each Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10:30 - 11:15 a.m. for our Senior Resistance Exercise Class. Many of the infirmities contributed to aging are prevented or reduced by staying active. Resistance exercise is used to maintain or build strength, muscle mass, muscle tone and muscular endurance. The goal of Senior Resistance training would increase your ability to produce and sustain muscular power.
Carson Valley Community Bingo
Bingo is growing in Douglas County! Come join us for a fun and exciting afternoon of community bingo on the third Sunday of each month at the Douglas County Senior Center. Doors open at noon with early bird games starting at 1:00 p.m. and regular games beginning about 1:30 p.m. We provide coffee, iced tea, popcorn and desserts for free; and hotdogs, nachos and soda are available for a donation. All proceeds go to benefit the Young at Heart Citizens Club, which supports activities and programs for the senior Community. Even though games are played at the Senior Center, Bingo is open to everyone over 21 years of age. Bring your family, friends, neighbors and your own dauber, because we want to hear you yell BINGO!!!
USO/Veterans Day Celebration
Join us for the 10th Annual USO celebration on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at the Senior Center. The festivities start at 10:30 am. We encourage all veterans to bring in their memorabilia to be displayed in the lobby starting on November 2nd.
Young At Heart Craft Fair
Start your holiday season off right with music, an all day raffle, snacks and gift ideas. Held on November 21st from 8am-3pm at the Senior Center.
Senior Christmas Party
This event is open to anyone age 60 and over. Join us for a meal, entertainment and holiday cheer. Held on December 12th at noon at the Senior Center. Bring a gift if you want to play in our pirate gift exchange. The gift should be $5.00 or more and males bring a gift for a male, or female for female. Please call the Senior Center at 783-6455 to RSVP or for more information.
11th Annual Senior Health Fair
Join us at the Carson Valley Inn on January 27, 2010 for our 11th Annual Senior Health Fair. The event will be held in the Shannon Ballroom from 9am-2pm. Admission is free. All ages are welcome. There will be a Senior Fashion Show at 1 pm.
AARP Driver Safety Course
Held on 12/5/09 from 12:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m., for a fee of $12.00 for AARP members; $14.00 for non-members. This class is a refresher course with emphasis upon how age-related changes affect driving. For drivers age 55 and older. 2010 dates TBA.
Silver Yoga
Yoga will improve mobility and muscular strength, advance flexibility and circulation, develop mental focus and sense of well being as well as deepening breathing. This class meets at the Unithed Methodist Church on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 10 a.m. Suggested donation of $2 per class. For more information call instructor Chris at 775-790-6373.
Creativity through Knitting & Crocheting
Come join instructor Linda Sawtelle each Monday 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Senior Center for creativity through knitting and crocheting. (On the second Monday of the month the class meets at the Aspen Mobile Home Park Clubhouse.) Linda brings 48 years of knitting experience and 20 years of crocheting experience to the classroom. There is "no fee" for the class, but classroom space is limited, so please call and confirm your interest. Contact the Senior Center at 783-6455 to reserve your spot.
Watercolor Classes
Offered at the Senior Center on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month from 9 am to noon. Cost is $20 per class per person which includes all materials and a completed picture to take home. For more information call instructor Lada Trimble at 882-6061.
Ceramics
The Senior Center has a ceramics room that is open to all seniors Tuesdays and Fridays from 9am to 3pm. Stop by and see Esther and Carolyn or call the center for more information.
Investment Discussion Group
Meets every 1st Monday at 10 am in the meeting room. It's an opportunity to discuss what's going on in the markets and what's good to invest in.
Green Thumb Garden Club
Meets every 4th Monday of the month at the Methodist Church. They discuss different topics each month regarding taking care of your gardens and yards, plus have guest speakers and scheduled bus trips. This club meets from March through November.
A Day at the Movies
If you are homebound or just need a lift, you can once again enjoy the legends of the silver screen. Call the Senior Center each month for information on the movie title and date of the movie. This trip is $2 and includes transportation to and from your home or the Senior Center, a movie and a bag lunch. To make a reservation, call the center at 783-6455.
World Gym, Ages 55 and over
Stay healthy and active with World Gym as part of the Senior Services "Life Options" program. You can enjoy the benefits of feeling great and maintaining your health from our various fitness programs. We offer low impact aerobics, pilates, yoga, treadmills, elliptical machines, bikes, free weights and selectrized machines. Monthly dues are only $19 and for seniors there is zero enrollment fee and a one time $29 processing fee. For more information contact World Gym at 782-2705 and ask for Kenny.
Johnson Lane Fitness, Ages 60 and over Johnson Lane Fitness, along with the Senior Services "Life Options" program, will be offering membership to their Health and Fitness Center at a total cost of $17 a month for people 60 years and older. An annual $17 enrollment fee is required. Johnson Lane Fitness is family owned and operated and provides a clean, friendly, and non-intimidating workout environment. The facility provides treadmills, elliptical machines, circut training and free weights all under the guidence of experienced professional trainers. They also offer "Senior Fit" classes by instructor Jenny Passas who specializes in senior fitness. For enrollment or more information, please call owner Kelly Corley at 267-0389.
Gold's Gym, Ages 60 and over
Gold's Gym, as part of the Senior Services "Life Options" program will be offering membership to the center at a total cost of $20 a month with no enrollment fee required! The facility provides treadmills and elliptical, circuit training and free weights. Trainers are available as well as helpful friendly staff. For more information please contact Josh at 267-1700.
