To assist you in protecting your property from flooding, Douglas County offers 10 steps for addressing flooding in the Annual Outreach Flyer.
If you want to find out if your property is in a FEMA designated flood zone, please call the Planning Division at (775) 782-6217, e-mail the Floodplain Administrator at mmoss@co.douglas.nv.us, or visit the Community Development Department public counter. The FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs), Floodplain Management Library, and Elevation Certificates are available at the public counter.
If you would like to schedule a meeting to submit an application for a building permit in a flood zone, please call (775) 782-6210 to schedule an appointment.
If you need additional information on building in a flood zone or would like county staff to visit your property to discuss flood protection alternatives, please call the Building Official at (775) 782-6220 and/or the County Engineer at (775) 782-9063. They can tell you about the causes of flooding, what the County is doing about it, and what would be an appropriate flood protection level.
By implementing good floodplain management practices, Douglas County has a FEMA Community Rating System (CRS) rating of Class #6. This rating allows Douglas County property owners to obtain flood insurance and up to a 20 percent discount on their flood insurance premiums.
